I recently had the chance to visit the Alaia Exhibit at the Alaia headquarters in Paris. The exhibit is a tribute to the recently deceased designer, whose work spanned nearly 60 years, 37 of those with his eponymous label, Alaia. Everyone knows that one line from Clueless, “But this is an Alaia!” and that was the first I heard tell of this legendary little man.
The exhibit itself was tiny, featuring only 41 of his dresses, but each of them was so intensely labored over. It almost felt like the details in one Alaia dress were the details that would appear in 20 “normal” dresses. Each of them had secrets to tell, and as a fashion design student I listened. If you enjoy fashion, I would highly recommend going. It’s small, not expensive, and even with 41 pieces you might be able to stay an hour (if you’re a nerd like me!).
“Je Suis Couturier” is open from 11am to 7pm every day at the Association Azzedine Alaïa, 18 rue de la Verriere, Paris 4th.
